“The path from inventor to entrepreneur” – Tatiana Sokolnikova has shared her experience in starting and doing business during her lecture

The “Your own startup” lecture by Tatiana Sokolnikova was held in the TUSUR Student Business-Incubator “Druzhba” on February, 21.

Tatiana Sokolnikova is a well-known Tomsk businessperson, the owner and the Executive Director of the Trans-regional Corporation “Argument” which has been successfully operating in Tomsk for 14 years. “Being an entrepreneur is not as easy as it may seem”, Ms. Sokolnikova. Not anyone can do business. According to the statistics, only 2.1% to 4.2% of population in different countries is engaged in entrepreneurship. That is despite all the tempting perspectives such as control over one’s future, integration of work and private life, significance for community and business-community, acquisition of property which can be inherited by one’s children – private business requires huge inputs and sacrifices.

And making one’s business successful is a challenge only for a person with unique qualities. Who is able to bear the load and what difficulties will they have to overcome? According to a survey by the Sanford Graduate School of Business and a polling held among Russian businessmen, the key factor for a successful business is ambition for perfection. Other important qualities are: impatience, vigor, stress tolerance, wish to work hard and relax well, ability to identify the core of a problem. Equally important qualities are persistence and purposefulness – the so-called “bulldog grasp”. An entrepreneur is rarely shy and is immune to “risklessness”, everything is done on the verge of a calculated risk.

“An entrepreneur should be healthy – physically, morally and emotionally”, Tatiana Sokolnikova believes, “Otherwise he or she will be unable to handle the pressure and the load.”

“When inventors demonstrate their developments to me and state that they want to start their own companies, I do not listen to their words at first. What I do is trying to understand who is talking to me and how they do the talking”, Ms. Sokolnikova says. An idea, a market outlet and startup capital are not enough to start a successful company. “What is vital for every new company is a dedicated leader – someone who can fully devote oneself to this new business and bring together the idea, the market outlet and investments.”
