European millions for Tomsk innovations

“One cannot invest from afar without knowing the local culture” – this principle is fundamental for the European Tech Tour. This and many other issues were discussed today in the Government of Tomsk Region during the meeting with Sven Lingjaerde, the President of the European Tech Tour Association.

Tech Tour is a three-day event where high-tech companies present themselves to European investors. Investors visit the country they are interested in to look through as many businesses as possible in a few days. The European Tech Tour Association (ETT) organizes the event annually in different Europeans countries – Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Norway etc. The Russian Tech Tour will be held for the second time, its sessions taking place in Moscow, Kazan and Tomsk on September 23, 24 and 25.

Two members of the Selection Committee will be representing Tomsk: Nikolay Badulin, General Director of Innovation Management Company FiBr, and Sergei Melchenko, Director of the Tomsk Technology Transfer Center.

According to Konstantin Fokin, President of the Russian Tech Tour 2009, a Tech Tour event usually lasts for 1.5 day, but in Russia it will last for 3 days in order to cover the wider geography and view more businesses. However, the selection procedure will be more complicated. The standard procedure of review by two members of the Selection Committee is now complemented by a semifinal screening. In the semifinal 50 companies will have a chance to present themselves to the Committee face to face. Half of them will be selected to present during the Tech Tour.

The deadline to submit applications is July 1 when the selecting process begins. By July 15 the Committee will announce the semifinalists who will have 2 more weeks to perfect their presentations before presenting them to the Selection Committee in August. To cut down on the applicants’ transportation expenses, it will be possible for them to present by means of a videoconference.

Today the venues for the Russian Tech Tour in Tomsk will be selected. According to Alexei Baryshev, Depury Governor of Tomsk Region, it is possible that a special session will be held for those businesses from Tomsk which do not qualify for the event.

Among the companies who have already submitted their applications are Elecard Devices, Electropulse, Sibovar, Mikran, Leader-Progress, FiBrA and others. Sven Lingjaerde, the founder and the President of the ETT says that about 60% of business at the event are at the stage of expansion, 40% - at the stage of seed or start-up. It is traditional to view a few pre-IPO businesses.

The Russian Tech Tour is a chance to present your company to investors free of charge. It is also a perfect opportunity to meet and communicate with the investors personally.

It should be noted that at least one company from Tomsk has already qualified for the semifinal of the Russian Tech Tour. It is the winner of the BIT 2009 competition, “Mechatronika-Pro” with their project “Operating environment for customized chips for mechatronic modules control in robotic systems”.
